Frequently Asked Questions
What does Museum Writers offer? We provide ready-made creative writing programs for museums, using your collections, exhibitions, and spaces as inspiration for adult writers.
What types of museums do you serve? Art museums, history museums, science museums, natural history museums, planetariums, and wildlife centers.
Who are the programs designed for? We create experiences for adults at every stage of the writing journey, from new writers to published authors.
What can we expect from writers in our museum? You can look forward to quiet, curious, attentive visitors who take their creative work seriously.
Will this program make money? Yes. You can charge for each event. Writers are used to paying for workshops, conferences, retreats, books, memberships, and creative experiences.
Even more importantly, writers make excellent prospects for museum memberships, donations, repeat visits, and additional paid programming. Affiliation gives writers exactly what they value: continued access to inspiration, exhibitions, events, and creative community.
In fact, writers could become some of your biggest community ambassadors!
Who’s behind Museum Writers? Museum Writers was founded by Corrine Kenner, who has written extensively about art and visual symbolism over the course of her career. She’s the author of more than 40 fiction and nonfiction books, which have been translated into 14 languages. She has taught writing for more than 20 years, and she leads monthly writing experiences at the Museum of Art-DeLand.
What supplies will we need? Paper, pencils, tables, and chairs. If you have a meeting room, classroom, or multipurpose space, you’re ready to welcome writers into your museum.
Do we need a professional writing instructor? No. Museum Writers provides the structure and facilitator guidance your staff needs to present the program with confidence. You could also invite a local writer to lead the group. Annual licenses include live facilitator training.
Can we offer Museum Writers programs during regular museum hours? Absolutely. Museum Writers experiences can fit neatly into your regular schedule. You probably won’t need to set up or clean up, either.
What does a Museum Writers license include? Depending on the license, you’ll receive facilitator guidance, participant handouts, writing activities, marketing materials, and other resources designed to help you present the program with ease.
How does licensing work? An introductory license covers one exhibition for three months. An annual license covers up to six exhibitions over twelve months. Custom programs receive a permanent license for the life of your exhibition. Click here for details.
Can you create a program specifically for our exhibition? We would love to. Custom commissions include a complete Museum Writers experience built around your exhibition, including original prompts, activities, workshops, handouts, promotional materials, and a custom 100-page writer’s guide.
How long does a custom program take to create? Most custom programs can be completed within four to six weeks, depending on the scope of the exhibition and the materials involved.
Can we see an example of a custom program? Sure. An Evening with Vincent van Gogh shows how a Museum Writers experience can turn one exhibition into an immersive writing journey.
How do we get started? Tell us about your museum, and we’ll take it from there.
