The Art of Writing Experience is a creative writing program designed for art museums that makes art the starting point for original writing.

Each session begins in the gallery. Writers choose a work of art, spend time with it, and look closely at what the artist has placed before them: subject, color, gesture, setting, mood, texture, symbolism, and detail. The goal is simple—to notice more, imagine more, and let the artwork open a door.

From there, writers move into the writing space and create whatever the artwork inspires. A portrait might become a character study. A landscape might launch a memory, mystery, poem, or piece of fiction. An abstract work might suggest a voice, emotion, scene, or question. A single detail might become the beginning of an entire story.

The Art of Writing Experience is designed to spark writing, not to teach art history or prescribe a specific form. Writers can work in fiction, memoir, poetry, personal essay, flash fiction, or any other genre that suits the piece and the idea it inspires.

Museums can tailor each event to their own collections, exhibitions, artists, and audiences. Sessions can focus on portraits, landscapes, abstraction, local artists, featured exhibitions, historical collections, or broad themes such as memory, place, identity, conflict, nature, or change.

Participants explore the gallery, gather impressions, write on site, and return to share what they discovered on the page.

The Art of Writing Experience turns looking into writing. Writers don’t simply view the art. They spend time with it, respond to it, and create something new from the encounter.
